Scalar Chain - Definition, Functionality and Limitattions

What is Scalar Chain?

When managing or being a part of an organization, it's essential to understand the various factors that keep it running smoothly. Communication is undoubtedly one of the most critical aspects of any organization.

The Scalar Chain is a concept that emphasizes the flow of communication within an organization, from the top-level executives to the lowest-ranking employees. In essence, it refers to a straight line or chain of authority that runs from the highest to the lowest rank in the organization.

Understanding the Scalar Chain and Its Functionality

Effective communication is the backbone of any successful organization. However, maintaining a clear and smooth flow of communication can be challenging, especially in large organizations with numerous employees. Miscommunication can lead to detrimental effects on the organization's performance and progress.

The scalar chain principle provides a solution to this problem by establishing a pre-planned and pre-decided flow of communication. This principle dictates that communication should flow from higher authorities to their immediate juniors and so on, ensuring that there is no confusion or misinterpretation.

Every department in the organization must follow this chain to ensure that communication is clear and concise. To better understand this principle, Fayol created a ladder diagram that illustrates how communication should flow from one employee to another. For instance, if employee 2 needs to communicate with employee 5 in an organization with five employees, the flow of communication should be 2 → 3 → 4 → 5.

By following this planned flow of communication, information is transferred more clearly and quickly from one authority to another, leading to faster problem-solving and improved organizational performance.

Limitations of the Scalar Chain

While the scalar chain is an effective means of communication within an organization, it does have one limitation. During times of emergency, the message may take longer to reach its intended recipient. However, this limitation can be overcome through the use of a concept known as the "GangPlank". This allows for direct communication between two authorities of different departments but of the same rank, enabling messages to be conveyed more quickly and efficiently.
