Jai Jawan Jai Kisan

Introduction

“Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” is a well-known slogan by India's second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965. It was in response to the nation's struggles with Pakistan and food scarcity. The slogan honours the army and farmers who protected the country.

The defense forces of India have safeguarded the nation from threats. This slogan helped highlight the significant role of these sectors in nation-building.

Over the Years

This slogan has had variations over time, representing India's progress. “Jai Jawaan, Jai Kisaan, Jai Vigyan”, by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and “Jai Jawaan, Jai Kisaan, Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan” by Narendra Modi indicate the nation's focus on science and research.

Other Versions

A variant of the slogan, "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan, Jai Vidwan", was introduced at the 10th Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award event. In 2021, Shashi Tharoor used "Na Jawan Na Kisan" to express dissatisfaction with the annual budget.

Impact

The slogan, with its new versions, continues to carry nationalistic feelings. It became so popular that a biopic on Shastri was named after it. The power of the nation lies in its people, who are fed and protected by the farmers and defense forces.
