MSME classification has been revised, expanding the scope to include more businesses.
Micro-enterprises registered on the Udyam portal will receive credit cards with a Rs. 5 lakh limit. In FY 2025-26, 10 lakh such cards will be issued.
A Rs. 10,000 crore Fund of Funds has been launched to provide additional financial support.
A new loan scheme offers up to Rs. 2 crore over five years for 5 lakh women and SC/ST first-time entrepreneurs, along with online capacity-building resources.
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the foundation of India’s economic growth. The government provides MSME registration to industries that meet the specified criteria, enabling them to access subsidies, tax exemptions, and credit support.
Initially, MSMEs were classified based on investment in plant, machinery, or equipment. However, the criteria were updated to include annual turnover, and the distinction between manufacturing and service sectors was removed.
Category | Investment Limit | Turnover Limit |
---|---|---|
Micro | Up to Rs. 2.5 crore | Up to Rs. 10 crore |
Small | Up to Rs. 25 crore | Up to Rs. 100 crore |
Medium | Up to Rs. 125 crore | Up to Rs. 500 crore |
Udyam registration is an online process for MSMEs through the Udyam portal. Although not mandatory, it provides benefits such as tax exemptions, easy loan access, and business support.
Currently, over 1 crore MSMEs are registered, contributing 36% to manufacturing and 45% to exports while employing around 7.5 crore individuals.
Businesses that meet the revised MSME classification criteria based on investment and turnover are eligible. These include:
Startups and entrepreneurs
Private/public limited companies
Sole proprietorships
Partnerships and LLPs
Self-Help Groups (SHGs), cooperative societies, and trusts
