How to Request for a Refund Reissue?

Guide to Requesting a Refund Reissue

If you've been notified by the Income Tax Department or the Refund Banker (SBI) that your income tax refund processing has failed, don't worry! You can easily request a reissue online through the Income Tax e-filing portal. Here's how:

Why Your Refund Might Fail

Sometimes, a refund scheduled for a specific assessment year doesn't hit your bank account. Here are a few common reasons why:

  • Bank Account Not Pre-validated: Starting from the assessment year 2022-23, pre-validating your bank account is mandatory.
  • Mismatch Between Bank and PAN Details: If your bank account was opened using your Aadhaar details, it might include your middle name, which may not appear on your PAN card.
  • Invalid IFSC Code: Banks merge, and IFSC codes can change. Make sure yours is up-to-date.
  • Account Closure: If you've closed the account linked to your refund, you'll need to update it.

How to Pre-validate Your Bank Account

  1. Login to the Income Tax e-filing portal with your user ID (PAN) and password.
  2. Click on the ‘Dashboard’ tab, select ‘Bank Account’, and hit ‘Update’.
  3. You'll be directed to ‘My Bank Accounts’. A green tick and ‘validated’ label will confirm your account is ready to go.
