About TAN -
Tax Deduction Account Number(TAN) or Tax Collection Account Number (TCS) is a 10 -digit alpha-numeric number issued by the Income-tax Department. All individuals who are obligated to collect or are responsible for deducting tax at source must obtain a TAN .
How to apply for TAN?
There are two types for applying for TAN:
OFFLINE - An application for allotment of TAN is to be filed in Form 49B and submitted to any TIN-FC.

ONLINE — On the NSDL TIN website, you can submit an online application for TAN.
Apply Online -
Step – I Visit https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/tan/form49B.html
Step – II Select Category of Detectors from the drop down menu and click on "Select Button".
Step – III Fill out the requisite details on the form.
Step – IV A response with the error(s) will be shown on the screen if any format level check of the applicant's data fails.
Step – V Forms must be submitted again after fixing any errors.
Step - VI If there are no errors at the form level, a confirmation screen with the applicant's data will be shown.
Step – VII The edit option is available if the applicant needs to make any changes to the data shown on the confirmation screen.
Step – VIII If the information being provided is accurate, the applicant must select the confirm option.
Step – IX An acknowledgment slip will be produced following the successful payment of fees (if the method of payment is different from DD or Cheque).
Step – X The applicant must print and save the acknowledgment before sending it, along with the other documents, to NSDL at

The envelope should be scribed as "APPLICATION FOR TAN - Acknowledgment Number" (e.g. 'APPLICATION TAN - 88301020000251').
