Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar is a verifiable 12-digit identification number, issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India ( UIDAI ) to the resident of India free of cost. Aadhaar is one of the most important documents for one's proof of identity and it is the one-stop identification of an individual.   UIDAI  on behalf of the government of India created a database for collecting biometric and demographic data of residents. Aadhaar is a proof of identity and address, valid for a lifetime.

what is Aadhaar

India is the largest country in the world with a population of more than 1.5 billion individuals. In such a large country, a need was to identify each individual for various financial and welfare services. As such, the Government of India launched the concept of the Aadhaar Card. Aadhaar also called the Unique Identification Number (UID). Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number that is allotted to individuals. Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident of India, may enroll to obtain an Aadhaar number. Person to enroll has to provide minimal demographic and biometric information during the enrolment process which is totally free of cost.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is the main agency that operates under the Government of India and is tasked with the job of issuing Aadhaar Cards to individuals. UIDAI collects the biometric and demographic data of the applicants and stores it in a centralized database. After the data is collected and verified, a unique Aadhaar number is issued which is printed on the Aadhaar Card. The card contains the Name, Date of Birth, Gender, and Address details of the cardholder. Moreover, there is a QR code in the Aadhaar card which can be scanned to access the details of the cardholder easily.

What is Baal Aadhaar

The UIDAI has launched a drive for a new variant of the Aadhaar card kids known as the Baal Aadhaar Card.

The Baal Aadhaar is issued to kids who are aged below 5 years and there is no need for them to provide any biometric information while getting registered for Aadhaar. To differentiate between the Aadhaar card is young and kids, the UIDAI issues Baal Aadhaar in blue color for kids who are aged below 5 years. Most of the government IDs are issued to citizens of India after attaining 18 years of age. But Aadhaar is the only such document that even a newborn can enroll for. At the time of issue of Baal Aadhaar, UIDAI will not capture the biometric details of the child. The demographic details will be taken from the Aadhaar card of any one of the parents. Just similar to the Aadhaar which is meant for adults, the Baal Aadhaar also has a 12-digit unique identification number and the same needs to be updated with biometric details of the child once they turn 5 years. A final set of biometric data will be collected when the child turns 15 years.
